The Arts in Global Society

Adapting Museums of the Age of Globalisation

27 - 28 June 2008

The State Galleries, Dresden together with the Institute of Strategic Dialogue brought together a small working group to prepare the agenda for a major conference in Dresden in the autumn of 2009 to mark the reopening of the Turkish Chamber with its collection of Islamic and especially Turkish art. The conference focused on the interchange of cultures in an increasingly globalised world of the arts, and the role of the museum in facilitating access to and understanding of the major cultures and their impact on the contemporary world.

The workshop comprised  of 15 participants, and included museum directors, art historians and sociologists. The discussions were wide-ranging and led to the conclusion that the 2008 conference should cover 3 principal areas: The influence of Islamic culture on the other main cultures; the representation of different cultures to each other; and analysis of the Enlightenment on Chinese, Islamic and other cultures.
