M100 Media Colloquium 2008
The Future of Eurasia
5 September 2008
Potsdam
The M100 Sanssouci Colloquium in 2008 invited participants from Russia, Central Asia and the Caucasus to join colleagues from Europe to assess their understanding and portrayal of the major current issues including the competition for influence in the shared Russian and European neighbourhoods, energy security and the rise of China.
The Colloquium was held on 5th September 2008 with a series of focused working sessions followed by a panel-led plenary debate in the afternoon at the Neues Palais. The situation in Georgia and the role of the media was discussed extensively. This year’s M100 Prize recipient was Ingrid Betancourt, the recently released Franco-Colombian politician. Ms Betancourt was held hostage by the radical left-wing FARC Rebels for six and a half years before being freed in July 2008.
The M100 jury awarded Ms Betancourt the 2008 Media Prize for her “Immense courage, her bravery and fortitude in her life-time struggle for freedom and justness.” In her speech of acceptance, she thanked the media for campaigning for her release during her captivity.
