Muslims in the European Mediascape Research Meeting
Researchers convene to discuss and map out findings
27 - 28 September 2011
London
On 27-28 September, ISD organised a research meeting to discuss the forthcoming publication emanating from the “Muslims in the European Mediascape” research project. The second in a series of exploratory projects conducted by Staffordshire University (UK), Keele University (UK) and the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research on Conflict and Violence (University of Bielefeld, Germany) in cooperation with ISD, researchers convened to discuss and map out the initial empirical findings gathered from a series of quantitative survey analyses and qualitative interviews and focus groups.
In this iteration, focusing on Germany and the UK, the project will seek to further explore the apparent emergence of parallel or segregated media communities, while addressing how potentially divergent patterns in media use within Muslim and non-Muslim communities may impact on identity, communal polarisation and broader intergroup relations. Above all, it seeks to analyse and interpret the apparent divergence between the production and consumption streams vis-à-vis mainstream and specialist media spheres, investigating the practical effects this may have on societal cohesion and integration. An innovative, transnational research programme funded by the Vodafone Foundation Germany and the British Council that commissions independent academic investigation into the experiences of media consumption and production in the UK and Germany, the findings of the second report will be published in the first quarter of 2012.
