Al Qaeda- affiliated and Homegrown Jihadism in the UK: 1999-2010

Launch of ISD Report

22 September 2010
London

The Institute for Strategic Dialogue’s Security and International Cooperation Programme released its new research report "Al Qaeda – Affiliated and ‘Homegrown’ Jihadism in the UK: 1999-2010" on Wednesday 22nd September, at an event with Baroness Neville-Jones, UK Security Minister and a group of invited guests.

Authored by Professor Jytte Klausen, the report compiles extensive evidence on the organisation of Jihadist activities, from the foot soldiers to the command structures behind the scenes. It uses network analysis software to visualise the complex and changing networks that power Jihadism. The findings challenge some of the fundamental assumptions about the nature of the movement. Five years on from 7/7, the empirical data provides a platform from which to reflect on the continued relevance of the terrorist threat, and to consider its future evolution.

Jytte Klausen is the Lawrence A. Wien Professor of International Cooperation at Brandeis University, an Affiliate at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University and a Senior Programme Advisor and Transatlantic Fellow at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue.
