Study Tours
The annual Study Tour is planned to provide the Scholars' with first-hand experience of national and international institutions, to offer an introduction to their workings, and to give the Scholars a opportunity to meet those involved in policy-making and administration at the highest levels.
Study Tour 2008; The inaugural Study Tour took the Scholars to Northern Ireland and focused on providing an understanding of the province's successful experience of conflict resolution. The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, the Rt. Hon. Shaun Woodward MP, invited the Scholars for a comprehensive examination of the Northern Ireland peace process and a reception and dinner at Hillsborough Castle. By visiting Belfast and through exposure to the perspectives of people directly involved in the conflict resolution, including representatives from the Northern Ireland office, the British Army, local community organisations and research institutes, the study tour enabled the scholars to gain a better understanding of the events and underlying causes of the Northern Ireland conflict.
Study Tour 2009: The focus of the 2009 study tour was on European institutions. The tour, funded and organized by the Konrad-Adenauer Stiftung, took the scholars to Brussels and Berlin where they engaged in an intensive series of lectures, presentations and meetings with senior figures in European Union, the High Command of NATO, and the Chancery of the Federal Republic of Germany. Topics covered ranged from the workings of the European Parliament, the regional effects of treaties, to the security threats facing Europe and its wider neighbourhood.
