Bernhard Schlink
The German novelist and lawyer Bernhard Schlink was the Weidenfeld Visiting Chair of Comparative European Literature for the 2007/8 academic year. Schlink's has received global critical acclaim and has been awarded prestigious literary prizes in Germany, France and Italy. His works include the global bestseller The Reader (1997). Schlink is also a Professor of Constitutional and Administrative Law at Humboldt University of Berlin and was a judge at the North Rhine-Westphalian Constitutional Court for eight years from 1988.
Schlink produced six lectures as the Visiting Weidenfeld Chair that were themed upon guilt over the Holocaust. They have subsequently been collated and published in Schlink's new book, Guilt About the Past (2009).
